Summer celebrations can bring to mind fireworks, parties with volleyball, beer and great music, or paddle boarding across the lake. It can also remind you of last year when your summer makeup ended up dribbling down to your kneecaps!
What can you do to keep your makeup on with potential double-digit temperatures this summer?
Here are six practical ideas to beat the heat and look hot—in a good way.
Apply & Reapply Sunscreen
The best way to fight premature aging is to minimize the harmful effects of UV radiation from the sun! Use a broad-spectrum SPF daily.
For proper protection, you need approximately ½ teaspoon of sunscreen.
Most foundations contain between 15 and 35 SPF, yet the quantity of product you use on your face doesn’t come close to the necessary amount to protect your skin from harmful rays. Even if you’re using SPF 50 separate from your foundation, you’ll still need to reapply it every two hours to avoid a skin-damaging sunburn!
Plus, using SPF 15 in your primer and SPF 20 in your foundation DOES NOT equal SPF 35 coverage for your face.
Personally, I use Image Skincare Prevention in SPF 35 under my foundation and have had excellent results.
Not sure which one goes on first? Apply your moisturizer, sunscreen, primer, and then foundation – in that order. And make sure you let each one fully absorb before applying the next one!
Opt for A Tinted Moisturizer
When it comes to high temperatures and summer makeup, the rule of thumb is “less is more.”
Wearing a heavier coverage foundation will, most likely, end up tricking down your face in a slow drizzle. And mineral powder foundations tend to bring out every line in mature skin under warmer conditions, so I don’t recommend them.
Instead, start with a skin primer like Makeup Forever Skin Equalizer. It keeps your summer makeup on and gives your skin a lovely glow, regardless of your skin type.
Then, opt for a tinted moisturizer like Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20 to moisturize and protect skin while giving you a hint of color. If you have oily skin, try the oil-free version.
Apply the tinted moisturizer in your T-zone where you need it. Focus on highlighting your cheekbones, lips, or even eyebrows, rather than covering your face completely. This will also make reapplying sunscreen easier.
Choose Waterproof Products That Will Stay Put
Waterproof everything as much as possible so your summer makeup will stay put when temperatures rise!
Try a cream eye show, such as Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow Stick. A no-sweat trick to keep your eye shadow on longer is to place a little setting powder on top of it. I swear by MAC Blot Powder because it’s a great sheer setting powder that also absorbs oil.
Create some snazzy cat-eyes with waterproof eyeliner, like Urban Decay Longwear Liquid Eyeliner, and add volume to lashes with Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof Mascara. But be sure you have some Makeup Forever Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover on hand to take it off or you’ll be wearing the liner and mascara long after the summer is over.
Also apply a cream blusher to give your cheeks color. Try multitaskers, like Benefit Benetint, which can act as a blush or lip stain!
For color choices, go with the easy feel of summer by choosing light peaches, pinks, and cherry red.
Add a Healthy Glow with Bronzer
If you are like me and have been religiously using your sunscreen, then your face is about two shades lighter than your body.
Rather than look like a vampire, I highly recommend using bronzer without mica in it. No suntan has ever come with glitter, no matter how much you wish it would. My personal favorite is Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer.
Just use the included brush and dust it lightly on the high points of the face where the sun would normally hit on your cheekbones, brow bones, top of your forehead, and chin.
Voila, you are a bronzed goddess without the age spots!
Opt for Lip Stain over Lip Gloss
Oh, how we love lip gloss, but in hot temperatures, it becomes a hot gooey mess.
Try YSL Glossy Stain for long-wear lip gloss at its finest. I used mine until the bottle begged for mercy.
Wet and Wild MegaLast Lip Color is another great option.
Finish Your Look with a Setting Mist
After you apply your makeup in the morning, spritz a little setting mist to help it last throughout the day.
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water can act as both a primer before makeup and a setting spray after makeup. It also can help your skin stay hydrated and supple all through those summer concerts that go late into the night.
With these six summer makeup tips in your beauty toolbox, you’re ready to look hot in the heat!
