Planes, Trains & Automobiles: Holiday Travel Skincare to Keep You Looking Your Best
Whether you’re flying, driving or traveling by train, climate changes, environmental exposure and harsh conditions can drastically affect your skin. And let’s face it, the holidays are stressful enough without having to worry about your appearance.
While you want to look and feel your best when you travel, you’re not going to take care of your skin properly if you don’t plan a simple regimen you can follow on the road.
Here are five easy tips to keep your skin healthy and radiant during holiday travel:
Water, Water & More Water
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Experts recommend you drink at least a half ounce of water for every pound you weigh. In simpler terms, take your weight and divide it by two. That’s how much water (in ounces) you need to drink to stay hydrated, especially at high altitude or when your body is under stress. Don’t like plain water? Try infusing your water with citrus or cucumbers to make it taste better!
You also should steer clear of foods or beverages that tend to dehydrate you. Avoid drinking coffee or alcohol, and eating salty foods like those little bags of pretzels or peanuts they give you on the plane.
Instead, take a metal water bottle that you can fill at the airport once you get past security, and pack a healthy snack so you can also avoid the temptation of indulging in airport food that you wouldn’t normally eat.
Choose foods that have a high-water content, such as cut-up veggies with hummus, fruit or a salad. Always take at least two snacks, like plain almonds and a low-sugar protein bar, with you just in case you can’t find a healthy option at the airport.
Start Your Holiday Travel Day Off Right
Your skin is exposed to a lot of hazards during holiday travel, including dry, stale air that robs skin of moisture, as well as germ-infested common areas like waiting rooms, rest stops and bathrooms that can lead to breakouts.
Start your travel day by giving your skin the hydration and protection it needs before you head out. Properly moisturized skin keeps out oil, dirt, germs and makeup, meaning fewer breakouts.
Follow the NuGlow® Daily Routine to prepare your skin for the day head. Gently wash your face with a moisturizing cleanser. Pat your skin dry gently with a clean towel. Then apply your toner, serum, eye cream and moisturizer. Don’t forget SPF, even in winter! Finish by applying a treatment to hydrate and protect your lips.

Keep Your Skin Hydrated
Pack a skincare and makeup travel kit to keep in your purse or carry-on suitcase so you can reapply your moisturizer and lip treatment as needed throughout your trip.

Make sure you clean your hands before you touch your face. You may not have access to a bathroom to wash them with soap and water, so take a small bottle of hand sanitizer with you. Always moisturize your hands afterwards. Most antibacterial gels have alcohol in them, which is great for killing germs, but it also dries out your skin.
When you keep skin properly hydrated, inside and out, you’re helping your natural defense system stay strong, which means you’ll look and feel better when you get to where you’re going!
Skip the Makeup & Go Au Natural During Holiday Travel
Your skin is dealing with a lot when you travel, so give it a break and don’t wear makeup.
Foundation and powders, like eyeshadow or blush, can be drying. Makeup can also hang onto to dirt, germs and oil, which can cause your skin to break out or flare up. Plus, the environment and harsh conditions will dry your skin out further, and force your skin to overcompensate. So, whatever makeup you applied will lose its luster, and it’ll be tough to keep eyeliner and mascara in place.
If you’re meeting people when you arrive at your destination, stop in the bathroom on the way to baggage claim. Please don’t use the recycled water on the plane! Wash your face and moisturize. Use eye drops to waken tired, dry eyes. Then, apply a tinted moisturizer, a multiple stick to highlight your eyes and cheeks, and waterproof mascara. Finish with a hydrating lip treatment. Simple, natural, beautiful.
For those of you that just can’t bring yourself to go without, keep things simple. Start with a hydrating primer to create a barrier and keep your makeup from sliding around, which tends to happen, especially on flights. Add a tinted moisturizer or BB cream, a cream blush for color and a lip treatment. Skip the mascara for now and add it when you get to your destination.
Use a cream blush or multiple stick that’s versatile enough for eyes, cheeks and lips. Creams tend to travel better. You apply them directly, instead of using a brush, which means less gear to carry with you. They’re less drying than powder, which will help your hydration factor. And they can handle the stress of travel without leaving a mess in your makeup bag.
Going au natural has its benefits – your skin will be healthy and hydrated, and your makeup will look amazing because you’ll be fresh when you get to your destination.
Know Before You Go
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is a U.S. federal agency that was established after 9/11 to protect us and our transportation system.
When you go to the airport, the TSA will check your identification and travel documents, and screen you and your carry-on luggage at a security checkpoint.
The TSA rules determine what you can and cannot take on an airplane. The 3-1-1 rule states that you can bring a clear quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams or pastes in your carry-on bag. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces or less per item.

The 3-1-1 rule isn’t limited to beauty or personal hygiene products. It also includes the snacks you’re taking with you, so pay attention when you take food items like yogurt or nut butters. Many of the convenience stores at the airport now carry individual servings of hummus, yogurt and other creamy snacks, so you can avoid a potential issue by buying them once you get past security.
Unless you have TSA Pre-Check, you must take your quart-sized bag from your carry-on luggage and have it X-rayed separately at the airport security checkpoint.
If you pack liquids or gels that are in containers larger than 3.4 ounces, you must put them in your checked baggage. Otherwise, the TSA will confiscate it and you may be subjected to further screenings.
Once you know the rules, they’re easy to follow. Most beauty products come in containers less than 3.4 oz. or have sample sizes available for purchase. If you want to avoid waste, you can get reusable TSA-approved size containers and repackage your products.
Looking amazing after a long day of traveling doesn’t have to be impossible or difficult. If you plan to hydrate your skin inside and out, and care for it properly, you can look amazing, even when you’re on the road.
